About this dataset

The canonical fuel-mix series serving energymap.in: hourly generation per fuel per state from the Atlas state-level fuel-mix model, with an explicit source tag and confidence on every row. National and zonal aggregates included.

This is the dataset behind the state fuel-mix pages and the carbon-intensity series.

Coverage — measured, not promised

Dec 2019 to present, hourly. Rows before 2025-09-20 are a monthly climatology for every state; later rows are modelled hourly values. The source tag on each row names its tier, and coverage stats break down the shares.

Caveats — read before you buy

  • Hourly state values are modelled. Over 99% of state rows come from the Atlas fuel-mix model or repeat the prior day (`estimated_from_prior_day`). The exception is a small metered tier (`metered_rpc_sem`: central-sector plants in 10 host states, June to early August 2026). The `source` and `confidence` columns name each row's tier.
  • Rows before 2025-09-20 are a monthly climatology: each state-month repeats a fixed 24-hour profile per fuel, with no day-to-day variation.
  • Exporter states are under-reported. Against station-level daily generation (NPP reports), 2024 coal ran 41-60% low in Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, and 24% low in West Bengal. From 15 July to 19 September 2026 the same five states ran 8-16% low.
  • Basis: physical in-state generation. Every plant inside a state's borders counts, whatever its sector (central, state or private), so a central-sector station in Bihar is Bihar generation here even though Bihar's SLDC books most of it as drawal. For each state-day covered by the NPP daily station report (DGR-2), the day's coal, gas, hydro and nuclear level is that report's total for the state; hourly values within the day are modelled. Solar and wind have no station-level truth.
  • Per-state validation against station-level daily generation (NPP DGR-2 via `npp_plant_generation_daily`), measured 2026-09-24 with `scripts/validate_state_fuel_mix.py --truth dgr2`: bias and WAPE (energy-weighted absolute error) of the daily mean, every state-fuel above 1 GW. The 60-day window (24 Jul to 21 Sep 2026) includes 4-7 August, still served from a stale July anchor; 1-21 September reflects the current method.

Frequently asked

What exactly do I get when I buy State Fuel Mix, Hourly (36 States)?

A one-time export built fresh from the live India Energy Atlas database at purchase time, delivered as csv_gz via a private tokened download link, with a per-state/per-month coverage report and a data dictionary included. Dec 2019 to present, hourly. Rows before 2025-09-20 are a monthly climatology for every state; later rows are modelled hourly values. The source tag on each row names its tier, and coverage stats break down the shares.

How is this licensed?

CC BY 4.0 — use it anywhere, including published work, with attribution: "India Energy Atlas (energymap.in), CC BY 4.0".

How fresh is the data and how are gaps handled?

The catalog shows live freshness straight from the source tables (15-minute server cache). Exports are built at purchase time, and every known multi-day gap is disclosed in the coverage report on this page — we never sell around a hole silently.

Can I configure the date range and states?

Yes — the configurator lets you pick the time window, states and format before checkout, and the price scales with the window you pick.

Do you offer pro-forma invoices or bank transfer?

Yes. Institutional buyers can request a pro-forma invoice and pay by bank transfer; the order unlocks automatically once payment is marked received. Stripe checkout (cards/UPI) is available for self-serve purchases.
